Wisconsin's 34th State Assembly District

The 34th Assembly District is an independent district that has trended both Republican and Democratic at times. The district consists of most of Oneida County and all of Vilas County and includes Rhinelander, Eagle River and Minocqua.

In 2006, Governor Jim Doyle received 50% of the vote in the district. While John Kerry was only able to capture 45.1% of the vote in 2004. Senator Russ Feingold won the district easily with 52.8%.

The Race

The 2008 race for the 34th Assembly District seat is expected to be one of the most competitive races in the state as second-time Democratic candidate Paul Tubbs attempts to unseat four-term Republican incumbent, Dan Meyer.

In 2006, Paul Tubbs was a first-time candidate and began his candidacy late before the election. Meyer defeated Tubbs with a total of 56.3% to 43.9% in their initial contest. In that election, Meyer was able to overpower Tubbs by greatly outspending him and relying on his high name recognition.

In 2008, Paul Tubbs has taken the lessons learned from his previous campaign and has reemerged as a more confident and savvy competitor. Building off the support and experience of his previous run, Tubbs is well positioned to return a Democrat to the 34th Assembly seat. The conventional wisdom also predicts the 2008 Presidential Election will increase voter interest and turnout to add to the momentum behind Paul Tubbs' campaign.

I'm looking forward to having more conversations with you at my listening sessions as your representative for the Wisconsin 34th Assembly District, but I can't do it without your help.
